The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.1% on a seasonally adjusted basis in July 2026, following a 0.4% decline in June. Over the past 12 months, the all items index rose 3.4% before seasonal adjustment.
Shelter and food prices were the primary contributors to the monthly increase. The shelter index rose 0.1% in July and accounted for roughly two-thirds of the increase in the all items index. The food index also increased 0.1%, with food away from home rising 0.3% while food at home declined 0.1%. In contrast, the energy index fell 1.5%, marking a second consecutive monthly decline after falling 5.7% in June. Within energy, gasoline prices decreased 2.9%, while electricity and natural gas increased 0.1% and 0.7%, respectively.
Excluding food and energy, the all items index rose 0.2% in July after being unchanged in June. Major contributors to the increase included medical care, airline fares, communication, education, recreation, used cars and trucks, new vehicles, household furnishings and operations, and apparel. Offsetting some of these gains, the motor vehicle insurance index declined 0.3%, while the personal care index was unchanged.
For the 12 months ending in July, the all items index rose 3.4%, slightly below the 3.5% increase recorded through June. The all items less food and energy index increased 2.5% over the year, down from 2.6% in June. The energy index advanced 14.7% over the past 12 months, driven largely by a 24.6% increase in gasoline prices, while the food index rose 3.0% over the same period.
