US Jobless Claims Fall to 196,000 During Holiday Week
Applications for US unemployment benefits fell to the lowest since July and recurring claims dropped to a more than two-year low, adding to signals of labor market stability.
Initial claims fell 10,000 to 196,000 in the week ended Sept. 12, one of the lowest readings since 1969, according to Labor Department data released Thursday.
Europe:
Bank of England Holds Rates, Warning of Hike If War Goes On
The Bank of England held interest rates at 3.75% while warning that a hike may be needed if inflation pressures intensify as a result of conflict in the Middle East.
Six of nine policymakers chose to leave the level unchanged, including Governor Andrew Bailey, as the committee split along the same lines as in their last meeting in July.
Asia:
BOJ Set to Hike Rate, Marking Fastest Pace Since 1990
The Bank of Japan is set to raise its benchmark interest rate Friday, delivering its most closely spaced rate increases since 1990 as upside inflation risks persist.
All BOJ watchers surveyed by Bloomberg expect the BOJ to hike its policy rate to 1.25% from 1% Friday at the end of a two-day meeting.
