Global Bond Rout Brings Highest US 30-Year Yield Since 2004
Yields on the US’s longest-dated bonds climbed to the highest level in more than two decades, the latest milestone in a global selloff driven by inflation fears and concern about government debt burdens.
A fresh jump in oil prices on Thursday lifted the rate on 30-year Treasuries by as much as four basis points to 5.44%, its highest since 2004.
Europe:
German Institutes Double GDP Forecast as Outlook Brightens
Germany’s leading economic research institutes more than doubled their joint growth forecast for this year, while a gauge of business optimism jumped to the highest since late 2025.
Gross domestic product is expected to 1.3% in 2026, up from 0.6% projected in the spring, the institutes said Thursday, citing a stronger performance than anticipated over the first six months.
Asia:
Yen Intervention Risk Re-Emerges as 160 Per Dollar Level Nears
Yen intervention risk is back in focus with Japan returning from holiday as a two-week long slide in the currency puts it back within reach of the closely watched level of 160 per dollar.
A slight gain of 0.3% to around 157.85 versus the greenback in Thursday morning trading in Tokyo has had little impact against the past four days of losses.
