US Mortgage Rates Jump to 7.49%, Highest Since 2023
US mortgage rates climbed for a seventh straight week to their highest level in nearly three years, compounding the nation’s affordability problem.
The contract rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage rose 19 basis points to 7.49% in the week ended Oct. 2, its highest point since November 2023, according to Mortgage Bankers Association figures released Wednesday.

EU Plans Import Cap on Chinese Hybrid Cars to Protect Sector
The European Union is preparing so-called safeguard measures that would limit imports of Chinese hybrid vehicles into the bloc in a bid to reduce the trade deficit.
The European Commission, which handles trade matters for the EU, may impose the restrictions after Chinese-made hybrid sales surged in Europe, according to people familiar with the matter.

Japan’s Real Wages Rise Again, Aided by Takaichi’s Relief
Japanese workers’ real wages rose for an eighth straight month, the longest streak of gains in almost a decade, as Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s inflation-relief measures helped bolster households’ purchasing power.
Real cash earnings — adjusted for inflation excluding rents — climbed 1.5% in August from a year earlier, the labor ministry reported Wednesday, matching the median economist forecast.
