Euro area unemployment at 6.2% and EU at 5.9%

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the euro area was 6.2% in April 2025, down from 6.3% in March 2025 and 6.4% in April 2024. In the EU, the unemployment rate was 5.9% in April 2025, the same as in March 2025, but down from 6.0% in April 2024.

Eurostat estimates that 12.902 million persons in the EU, of whom 10.680 million in the euro area, were unemployed in April 2025.

 

  • Compared with March 2025, unemployment decreased by 188 thousand in the EU and by 207 thousand in the euro area.
  • Compared with April 2024, unemployment decreased by 217 thousand in the EU and by 343 thousand in the euro area.

 

Youth unemployment

 

It is reported that 2.859 million young people (those under 25) in the EU were unemployed in April 2025, with 2.272 million of those individuals living in the euro area. In the EU, the rate of youth unemployment fell to 14.8% in April 2025, down from 15.0% in March 2025. In the euro area, the rate of youth unemployment fell to 14.4% from 14.8% in March 2025.

 

  • Compared with March 2025, youth unemployment decreased by 57 thousand in the EU and by 74 thousand in the euro area.
  • Compared with April 2024, youth unemployment increased by 19 thousand in the EU, and by 16 thousand in the euro area.

Unemployment by sex

 

In April 2025, the EU’s unemployment rate for women fell to 6.1%. Similarly, the rate for men decreased from 5.7% to 5.6%. In the euro area, the unemployment rate for women dropped to 6.5%, down from 6.6% the previous month, while the rate for men fell to 6.0%, a decrease from 6.1% the previous month.
