United States:

US Consumers Keep Spending Faster Than Incomes Are Growing

US income growth is running further behind consumer spending, prompting Americans to dip into their savings and generating concerns about the sustainability of robust household demand — the economy’s main engine.

Inflation-adjusted consumer spending increased 2.6% in November from a year earlier, according to Bureau of Economic Analysis data out Thursday.

Euro-Zone Private Sector Steady as German Rebound Offsets France

Private-sector activity in the euro area maintained moderate growth in January as Germany’s fledgling economic recovery helped offset weakness in France.

The Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index compiled by S&P Global remained at 51.5 for a second month, holding above the 50 threshold separating growth from contraction.

BOJ’s Ueda Avoids Clear Early Rate Hike Signal as Yen Gyrates

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda stuck to his even-handed stance on the central bank’s rate-hike path after holding the benchmark steady and raising the inflation outlook, with his comments helping nudge the yen lower before it rebounded abruptly.

The BOJ left its policy rate unchanged Friday at 0.75%, according to a statement, as it takes time to assess the impact of last month’s increase and awaits the outcome of a snap election that may affect the nation’s spending plans.
