Canada Imposes Tariffs Up to 50% on US, Risking Wider Trade War
Canada imposed tariffs of 15% to 50% on hundreds of products from the US on Tuesday, as Prime Minister Mark Carney bets that standing up to President Donald Trump will eventually help Ottawa’s negotiating position with its biggest trading partner.
Carney’s government increased the import tax on many US steel items to 50% from 25%, and applied tariffs to a range of consumer goods — motorcycles, cosmetics, cheese and more — at 12:01 a.m. New York time.

German Exports Unexpectedly Decline for First Time Since January
German exports unexpectedly dropped in July, snapping five months of gains and muting hopes for a quick recovery in Europe’s largest economy.
Shipments abroad dropped 0.8% from a month earlier, defying the median economist prediction of another increase. The decline was due to a retreat in exports to European Union countries, the nation’s statistics office said Tuesday.
