The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI‑U) increased 0.5% on a seasonally adjusted basis in May 2026, following a 0.6% gain in April. Over the past 12 months, the all items index rose 4.2% before seasonal adjustment.
Energy remained the dominant driver of monthly inflation, rising 3.9% in May and accounting for over sixty percent of the overall monthly increase. The shelter index also advanced in May, rising 0.3%. The food index increased 0.2% over the month, with food at home edging up 0.1% and food away from home rising 0.3%.
Excluding food and energy, the all items index increased 0.2% in May. Notable increases were recorded in communication, airline fares, medical care, personal care, and recreation. Major components that declined included motor vehicle insurance, household furnishings and operations, and new vehicles.
For the 12 months ending in May, the all items index rose 4.2%, up from 3.8% for the 12 months ending April. The all items less food and energy index increased 2.9% over the year, following a 2.8% gain through April. The energy index surged 23.5% over the past 12 months, while the food index advanced 3.1% over the same period.
